Ferry to Elba

Guide

Taking your car to Elba by ferry

Every regular ferry from Piombino carries vehicles - the conditions depend on route and operator

  • All three feeder routes from Piombino carry vehicles
  • Fares follow length and height, roof boxes and trailers count
  • Vehicles face longer check-in deadlines than foot passengers

Before you book

What a vehicle booking needs from you

The vehicle details determine the fare and the space on board. Have them ready before you search.

Vehicle class

Cars, motorbikes, campervans and vans are priced separately. Pick the class that matches your registration document.

Length and height

Measured including fittings. Roof boxes, bike racks, rear carriers and trailers make your vehicle longer and taller.

Trailers and roof loads

A trailer is usually its own line in the booking. Declare it separately instead of estimating a combined length.

Outbound and return dates

Vehicle spaces are the scarce commodity in high season. Book the return leg as soon as your plan is fixed.

Choosing a port

Which arrival port suits your destination on Elba?

All three ports take vehicles. The choice mainly decides how far you drive after landing.

How a vehicle booking works

Elba is not a car-free island - unlike many small Italian islands there is no seasonal landing ban for non-resident vehicles. All three regular feeder routes from Piombino are vehicle ferries, and for a large share of visitors the crossing is simply the final leg of a road trip through Tuscany.

In the booking you first pick the route and the sailing, then the vehicle category. The fare follows length and height, and fittings count. If you are unsure, measure - an under-declared category gets corrected at boarding, in the worst case onto a different ship than planned.

At the port in Piombino

The ferry terminal is at Piazzale Premuda; the approach runs along the SS 1 Aurelia signed Venturina-Piombino-Isola d'Elba. Vehicles queue in front of the boarding gates and are called forward from there. If you arrive by train and only hire a vehicle on Elba, Piombino Marittima station puts you right at the port.

Check-in with a vehicle

The deadlines are operator-specific and stricter with a vehicle than on foot:

Operator Without a vehicle With a vehicle
Toremar at least 30 min. before departure at least 30 min. before departure
Moby (1 June - 30 Sept.) at least 1 hr before departure no later than 90 min. before departure
Moby (1 Oct. - 31 May) at least 30 min. before departure no later than 90 min. before departure
Blu Navy 15 min. before departure 30 min. before departure

Once the deadline passes, carriage is no longer guaranteed. Blu Navy advises 30 to 60 minutes of slack on summer weekends anyway - in high season there is a queue in front of the gates.

On board

Vehicles are directed by the crew and may be parked on any vehicle deck. Apply the handbrake, leave it in gear, switch off the lights and disable electronic alarms. Take everything you need during the crossing upstairs with you: the vehicle deck is closed while the ship is under way. For pets that means they come up on deck rather than staying in the car.

Arrival and onward drive

Portoferraio is central and gives the shortest onward drive for the centre and the west. Cavo and Rio Marina put you quickly into the north-east and the east coast but leave a good half hour of island road to Portoferraio. Build that stretch into your comparison rather than looking only at the time on the water. Which sailings exist for your date is in the timetable; what moves the fare is on the prices page.

FAQ cars and ferries

Frequently asked questions

Questions about taking a vehicle to Elba.

Can I take a campervan?+

Yes. Campervans travel on the regular ferries and are priced by length and height. Book the class that matches your actual measurements, including fittings, awning and bike rack.

What about a motorbike?+

Yes, motorbikes are their own vehicle category and usually much cheaper than a car. Like cars they are directed by the crew and secured on deck.

Do the ferries take bicycles?+

Yes, for a fee. Conditions differ by operator and sailing - Blu Navy lists bicycle loading as a separate service. Settle it before booking if the bike is part of your trip.

Can my dog stay in the car?+

On Toremar ships dogs are allowed on a lead and muzzled, cats and small animals in a carrier; they may not enter the seating lounge. Blu Navy permits one pet per passenger, on the outside decks only and with its own ticket. You cannot stay on the vehicle deck during the crossing, so do not plan to leave the animal in the car.

How early do I need to arrive with a car?+

Expect a cut-off. Toremar requires at least 30 minutes before departure, Moby from 1 June to 30 September no later than 90 minutes before departure with a vehicle, Blu Navy 30 minutes. Arrive later and your space is no longer guaranteed.

Can a hire car go on the ferry?+

Check before booking whether the rental company allows the crossing and on what terms. The operator does not verify this - the rental agreement is your responsibility.
